About

Hi, I’m David. I’m a seasoned Japan travel expert with fifteen years’ experience planning thousands of bespoke itineraries for discerning clients. Ten of those years were spent working at some of the UK’s most prestigious travel operators, developing product alongside client relations and travelling to Japan at least once a year.

The journey began in childhood, when I was fascinated with the fine arts and crafts that my grandparents brought back from their trip to the Far East. Like many teenagers I grew up on a diet of Japanese computer games, Manga and anime and got hooked on Haruki Murakami in sixth form. I taught English for two years in Tokyo in my mid twenties, taught myself Japanese and passed the intermediate language exam.

Since 2008 I’ve been working as a Japan travel expert and product development manager, travelling far and wide throughout Japan on annual research trips during my thirties before taking a management position in Tokyo as I turned 40. The pandemic changed my fortunes though, and coming out the other side of it I decided to launch JapanMan.

Why now? It’s partly a lifestyle choice – I live in South-East Asia and can visit Japan much more easily from here. But it’s also a response to the limitations I see in the travel industry. 80% of people end up visiting the same half a dozen places in Japan, and the price tag for such generic itineraries is often rather questionable. You can plan your trip independently of course, but again the various online blogs and groups tend to focus on central Japan and largely ignore the rest of it.

JapanMan steps into the gap by offering truly expert advice gained from dozens of trips the length of the country, designing many ambitious itineraries (did you know you can have a ski trip and a beach break on the same Japan holiday?), and Japanese language proficiency that enables me to explore well off the beaten track.

So if you want to go further than most and see sights that foreigners rarely see, contact JapanMan for peace of mind during the planning process.
