The autumn leaves are turning colours as far south as Yamadera mountain temple and shrine complex about three hours north of Tokyo. Red momiji (maple) and yellow ginkgo leaves frame the ancient structures.
It’s a rare combination of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines nestled along a cliff-face and accessed by steep stone steps. Not for the faint-hearted then, but the views from the top are pretty phenomenal – a whole vista of autumn colours opens up before you. It’s definitely in JapanMan’s top five leaf-peeping spots.
